He studied engraving with his father until 1840, when he traveled to Europe to study painting. Over time his style evolved from traditional Dutch landscape style to a more Luminist style. He was acclaimed and successful in his lifetime, and in turn was an avid supporter of the arts and artists, and among other things a founder and trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.</p> <p>Giclee (jee-clay) is an advanced printmaking process for creating high quality fine art reproductions.
